NM 7s – Competitive but no glory for BRK
10th June 2017
Bergen Rugby Klubb shared mixed feelings throughout the day at the 2017 NM rugby 7s, playing at home on the 4G pitch, Krondsminde.
New talents have joined the BRK ranks which provided an exciting spectacle for the crowds and teams participating in this year’s NMs.
The day started with BRK facing last year’s Champions Stavanger. An early score for Bergen and promising start saw the opposition caught between the headlights, however for only a moment. Their strength and skill had Stavanger run away with the game in the second half. This was the only try Stavanger let slip until the final in the afternoon. A good start for Bergen.
Bergen faced NTNUi and Oslo fusion during the middle part of the day. Mario Silva and Luka Sousa who have come through the BRK junior set up showed real promise, and jointly put in the biggest tackles of the day. Good pace and hands from Diego Montoya gave BRK some great attacking opportunities for the likes of Jefta Cerderstam and Gonzalo around the wings.
However, both games came without a win. Oslo Fusion put the hammer down with some expansive 7s play; a weary and tired looking Bergen side had nothing to answer with. Perhaps not unexpected from a new and upcoming team.
Bergen needed to refocus. With the team agreeing, the last game against Sparbu IL Rugby had to be a win. A team performance, with everyone emptying the tanks, gave the home crowd something to cheer about. David Kjetland, Bjornar Tjosevik and Mike Fox providing the power in the set pieces allowed our pace to run in six tries. A well-earned victory after a mixed bag of feelings throughout the day.
Congratulations to Stavanger Rugbyklubb who retain their title as NM 7s winners for another year.
The sparks are there for BRK, and with some focus and grit, will once again be a force to be reckoned with.
